Racing & Time Trials

The Club has a very active racing contingent and Time Trialling is particularly strong with over 20 events promoted each year. Members also participate in Road Racing (mass start) and the Club is active in the season long Portsdown Time Trial League, a competition run over ‘sporting’ courses where there is at least one significant hill.

For new members who have not raced before we offer sound advice based on years of experience by club members who have been highly successful in their own right. As with all Clubs we encourage not only participation in races but also help behind the scenes (course signage, timekeeping etc) so that everyone is involved in all elements of the racing scene.

Competitions and Awards

No cycling club would be complete without its own set of awards and BRCC is no exception. To this end the Club recognises achievements in the following categories:

The Les Janman BAR (Best All Rounder) – Awarded to the rider with the fastest times at 8, 10 and 25 miles. The award is based on highest average speed across all distances

The Blue and Gold Thursday Shield – Awarded to the club rider who accrues the highest number of points at 8 miles (2 best events) and 10 miles (6 best events)

The Dennis Doughty Memorial 25 mile Shield – Awarded to the fastest rider in the Dennis Doughty Memorial 25 mile time trial. This event specifically supports the Rocking Horse children’s charity.

Club Records – Any rider breaking a club record automatically receives a certificate and the record holder at the end of the season also receives a club skinsuit

Club Certificates - Individual Performances are recognised each year for:

Fastest performances at 10, 25 and 50 miles in any event by Youth (U16), Junior (U18), Senior and Veteran (40+) by male and female 1^st claim club members

Time Trials

An individual time trial (ITT) is a road bicycle race in which cyclists race alone against the clock on flat or rolling terrain, (in French: contre la montre – literally "against the watch"

Starting times are at equal intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. Competitors are not permitted to draft (ride in the slipstream) behind each other. The rider with the fastest time is declared the winner.

The BRCC Approach to TT's

At time trial events across the country you will always find those who take the sport very seriously, special ultra light and aero bike frames, skin suits, slip stream helmets and the latest in cycling tech all to shave those extra few seconds off their time.

We embrace this and each event is run strictly according to the governing rules. But we also feel that this is aspect of cycling sport should be open to everyone, and we encourage anyone to take part. Whatever level of cyclist you are and whatever equpipment you own you are welcome to enter and take part in this exciting field of competitive cycling.

 

Novice TT

This year we are introducing a novices time trial event. This is designed for anyone, especially young riders, who have not entered a competition like this before and want to give it a try.

 

The Rules

All Competitors in BRCC organised Time Trials ARE required to start on machines fitted with FLASHING Rear Lights incorporating a minimum of 3 L.E.Ds. Riders ARE required to wear a Hard Shell Helmet complying with an internationally recognised safety standard.
